The increasingly demonized comics are known as manga, a style of comic from Japan that has become popular around the world.
It is worth noting that while manga has a reputation for being very violent and erotic, many of the comic books are no more violent than some of the action and horror movies that come out of Hollywood each year and make it to Vietnamese cinemas.
However, parents are complaining that it is the most violent and titillating manga comics that are the most popular among children.
Manga is full of images of girls in sexy clothes or even naked, but have concerned parents also noticed the increasingly scantily-clad female models used in TV,
magazine and billboard advertising in Viet Nam? Advertisers have a saying: "sex sells", and it seems unfair to put all the blame on manga.
It’s not absolutely clear if parents are more concerned about the sexual content of manga, or the over-the-top violence. It seems that while people should be more concerned about the violent content, it’s the eroticism that has parents up in arms. But what’s worse to see: a body slashed and riddled with bullets, head blown off, or a girl in underwear?
It’s an issue that has long been a concern in Western countries, as attitudes about sex relax and societies become less conservative. It’s also an issue in Japan, the birthplace of manga. But is Japanese society out of control because of manga and are all Japanese children sex maniacs
